The Centre for the competence of Arts Education “Latgale Music and Art Secondary School” was established on August 1st, 2023, reorganising Rezekne Secondary School of Art and Design and Janis Ivanovs Rezekne Secondary School of Music. Ourvalues are: collaboration, creativity and tradition. We are all working together now and will continue to work to nurture, develop and build these values to a new level. We believe there are no limits to collaboration, art and music need world breath as air that unleashes and allows you to take over from others, enrich others with what you have.
About the competition “Guoyu pa JAZZ”:
The main goal of the international competition of ethnojazz music ensembles “Guoyu pa JAZZ” is to highlight the traditional values of our region, in our case Latgale, and to incorporate elements of folk music into the modern music genre. This is already evidenced by the title given to the competition, which was inspired by Latvian folk song “Guoju pa mežu”.
It's very important not to forget and be proud of our cultural wealth, the place we're born in and the people who make our live richer. This competition promotes the professional development of young musicians, the comprehensive development of a person, the skills and experience of collective performances of students of music educational institutions, develops the tradition and quality of musicalisation of instrumental and vocally instrumental ensembles in modern rhythm and traditional music styles. All the contestants shared the task of playing two different pieces: original arrangement of native songs and original composition of a free-choice piece incorporating elements of ethnic music.
During the competition, each listener has had the opportunity to acquaint himself with unheard originals of folk songs from various regions of Latvia and neighbouring countries, thus revealing and introducing all those present with their folk wealth in a new sound. All three Baltic states were represented in this year's competition, bringing together more than 60 participants in total (6 ensembles from Latvian music secondary schools and one from each - Lithuania and Estonia).
According to the jury's assessment (with the same score, which only changed after lengthy and tough panel discussions), the performance of the ensemble “Bruoļi i Muosys” from “Latgale Music and Art Secondary School” was recognised as the 2nd best. The competition was live-streamed on YouTube and Facebook by the creative team of “Ventspils Music Secondary School.”
Winners of the 2024 "Guoyu pa JAZZ" contest:
The ensemble formed out of a merger of students from traditional music and jazz music departments, who each get carried away with their chosen style but aren't afraid to get out of their frames and fade neatly through the chords of their neighbours. Everyone's dream is to continue playing. Although we are quite different and sometimes speak in a different musical languages, we are able not only to exist together amicably, but also to play together and get along.
